About Smart Investor

A directory of fiduciary advisors, built the way we'd want one for ourselves.

Most advisor directories run on paid placements and affiliate payouts. We don't. Every firm listed here is included on the strength of what it discloses — credentials, fee structure, minimums, and fiduciary status — not what it's willing to pay for visibility.

Why this exists

The decision to hire a financial advisor is one of the highest-stakes choices most people make with their money — and the existing tools for making it well aren't great. Search "financial advisor near me" and the top results are paid listings, lead-generation forms, and directories that hide who paid to be first. The relevant information — credentials, fee structure, minimum account size, fiduciary posture — is usually buried or absent.

This directory exists to publish that information directly, in one place, with no pay-to-play layer on top. Every advisor page shows what the firm itself discloses, with one click each to the public regulatory records at FINRA BrokerCheck and the SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database so you can verify anything you're skeptical of.

About the founder

This directory is a side project by someone who has spent 40+ years in enterprise IT — building data pipelines, running 24×7 cloud operations, and leading global customer-engagement teams. More recently, day-to-day work with AI systems — Claude Code, RAG pipelines, ETL automation, AI-powered dashboards — has shaped how this site is built.

None of that makes me a financial advisor. I'm not licensed, I'm not a CFP, and nothing on this site is personal investment advice. What 40 years of operational discipline does bring is a clear view of what it takes to turn messy public data into something a person can actually trust: validation before publication, dedup rules that actually work, audit trails, and the honesty to flag what looks wrong instead of quietly shipping it.

The 4,800+ advisor listings on this site came through exactly that kind of pipeline. Descriptions are AI-generated — but only after human-authored rules strip out software lists, regulatory boilerplate, and the other noise that scraped business records carry. The tools section is written with the same posture: look hard, write the trade-offs plainly, take no money for placement.

This project exists because people making the biggest financial decisions of their lives deserve a resource that was built with real care — not one where the top listings were auctioned off to whoever paid the most.

What you'll find here

Three things, in descending order of emphasis:

  • 01 · Core A national directory of investment advisors

Searchable by state, city, and specialty. Every entry lists credentials, fee structure, minimums, fiduciary status, and a link to the firm's own regulatory record.

  • 02 · Research Plain-English guides on how to hire one

What to ask, what to avoid, how to read a Form ADV, how fee structures actually compare. Short, opinionated, and free of generic "choose the right advisor for you" filler.

  • 03 · Tools A curated list of investor tools we've tested

Stock screeners, portfolio trackers, research platforms. Rated on usefulness, not on whoever sponsored us to feature them.

What we don't do

  • × Take placement fees or bump advisors up the list for payment.
  • × Recommend specific advisors or send you to a referral network.
  • × Publish AI-generated advisor reviews or synthetic-sounding puffery.
  • × Provide financial advice, portfolio recommendations, or planning — we publish information about advisors, not investment guidance.

How listings get added and removed

Firms are added from public regulatory sources (BrokerCheck, SEC IAPD, state RIA registries). Descriptions are checked against the firm's own website and Form ADV Part 2A. If a firm disputes a listing — credentials displayed incorrectly, fiduciary status misrepresented, an outdated address — email us from the contact page and we'll correct or remove the entry within one business day.

Disclosure

Smart Investor is independently operated. The site earns revenue through display advertising and, on the Tools section only, a small number of affiliate links where clicking through to a tool vendor may pay us a referral fee. Affiliate status is noted on each affected page; it never affects a tool's rating or inclusion. The advisor directory contains no affiliate links of any kind.
